Meta, using artificial intelligence, finds an account that may belong to a teenager, after which the platform re-registers the account and adds age restrictions, even if the account has an adult's date of birth, the company said in a statement .
Teen Accounts, a special account for teens with built-in protection, were introduced on Instagram last year. Teen Accounts automatically limit who can contact a teen on Instagram, as well as the type of content the account owner can view. Teens under 16 need parental permission to change any of these settings.
“We’ve been using AI to determine age ranges for some time, but applying it in a new way is a big change. We take steps to ensure our technology is accurate and correctly places teens we identify in age-appropriate protective settings, but if we’re wrong, we give people the opportunity to change those settings,” the company said in a statement.
Meta claims that at least 54 million teenagers worldwide are currently registered on their platforms, and 97% of teenagers aged 13-15 have limited, protective personal pages.
