Yesterday it was announced that Nvidia will buy Intel shares for $5 billion and plans to jointly develop «multiple generations of specialized products for data centers and PCs.» This raised questions about the future of GPU production for Intel, which recently returned to the gaming graphics card market.
«The collaboration complements Intel’s roadmap, and Intel will continue to offer GPU products,» a company spokesperson assured the media. That’s pretty clear, at least in the short term.
Intel’s roadmap currently includes at least two new generations of processors featuring the Arc Xe3 iGPU: Panther Lake and Nova Lake. The first of these is expected to hit the market relatively soon and will be aimed exclusively at laptops. The second will arrive later and, like the current generation Arrow Lake, will be available for both desktops and laptops.
One of the key points in this process is the Arc Xe architecture and, in addition, discrete graphics cards. Intel first released the Arc GPU in 2022, and since then has released two generations of discrete Arc graphics cards. It is also used in laptops as integrated graphics, but Intel already had the less powerful Iris Xe for that.
The recently announced Intel-Nvidia partnership will span both data centers and, likely, laptop/mobile chips. Intel’s server chips will be paired with Nvidia GPUs via NVLink, while consumer SoCs will be made that pair Intel processors with Nvidia RTX GPU chipsets.
Experts believe that if Nvidia starts to embrace Intel’s mobile GPUs, Intel may have less incentive to invest resources in developing its own GPU architectures.
