"400 rubles. You won't believe it, IT people existed before mammoths." IT professionals recall their first salary in Threads

Threads user Diana Smelikova asked IT professionals how much they earned when they started in IT. We selected the most interesting answers from the discussion.

Diana Smelikova herself answered her question by saying that she came to IT 8 years ago. At that time, her first salary was 3,000 UAH, and the dollar exchange rate was 25 UAH.

Here's what other IT people responded to.

@v_nikuca
$600. That was mega money for me in 2023. I left accounting with toxic management.
@solomonko
800 UAH. But I was happy like a child, because it was more than 5 times my scholarship.
@servitpol

Well, here's what exactly counts as an IT job:

1998 — on vacation at the toy library,

20-30 UAH per day. What was the exchange rate?

2003 — assembled computers, earned about $200.

2010 — manager at a company that sold computers, salary around $500-700.

2013 — ATM/TSO engineer (bank IT department) — $700-900.

2016 — SEO specialist $500.

2017 — developer $300.

In 2019, with €2,500 in cash, I was a green-green June, my secret was that I worked in Copenhagen.
@kirpitchec
400 karbovanets (Soviet rubles). You won't believe it, IT specialists existed before mammoths. Someone has a grandmother in a pot on a mantelpiece, and here I am, like your great-great IT specialist alive.
@andrii_joy
$1415 is a strange number that I never managed to understand.
@weekend.investor.ua
Also, somewhere around $250 at the exchange rate will be about 3k UAH, I added another thousand to my first salary and bought a shitty bike to get to the office.
@martakerez
Somewhere in 2012-2013, I was still in my 4th year, I was hired as a non-tester for $350, it was constantly increasing and in a couple of years it was already $750…at this figure my IT career ended. What was the rate there, I was already 100, probably 20-25 UAH per $.
@oleksii_demydenko
500 UAH/month minus taxes. In 2003, it was slightly above the average salary — something like $100. $50 of that went to rent an apartment. While I was a student, I earned at least 100 UAH/day doing repairs, but I had to make a choice — either continue to work on construction sites, but not deny myself anything, or look for something in my specialty and put my teeth on the shelf.
