Rector of Lviv Polytechnic Natalia Shakhovska said that in this year’s admission campaign, IT specialties are in third place in popularity, and the cybersecurity direction has broken the record for the number of applicants. In her opinion, such a large number of applicants is associated with Russian cyberattacks.
Shakhovskaya told about this in an interview with DOU.
«There is no disaster in IT specialties, just like last year. The small number of budget places that are not closed now will be closed by beneficiaries. Cybersecurity this year again broke all records in terms of the number of applicants — 364 applicants», — noted the rector of Lviv Polytechnic.
According to her, the computer science major, which is represented by five specialties at the university, has the highest enrollment rates in Ukraine.
Natalia Shakhovska believes that the large number of young people who want to study cybersecurity is related to Russian cyberattacks and protection against them, which are «on the radar» in Ukraine. «The popularity of cybersecurity is due to the circumstances we find ourselves in. As is the popularity of psychologists», — the rector notes.
She said that the most popular majors at Lviv Polytechnic are humanitarian specialties — psychology, economics, followed by management and marketing, and then IT.
«This is not only a Ukrainian trend, but a European trend. The demand for humanitarian specialties in recent years, unfortunately, has exceeded that of engineering», — said Shakhovska.
Earlier, the Head of the State Special Communications Service, Oleksandr Potiy, spoke about the shortage of cybersecurity specialists. According to him, it amounts to tens of thousands of specialists.
Recently, the Federation of Military-Technological Sports of Ukraine and SET University signed a memorandum of strategic cooperation aimed at developing cybersecurity through educational programs, CTF (Capture The Flag) competitions, and preparing Ukrainian athletes to participate in international tournaments.

«We need another 1,000 people who will be the core. And in general, the deficit at various levels is tens of thousands of specialists.» The head of the State Special Communications Service estimated how many people are needed for the cybersecurity sector in connection with the adoption of the new law
