«The hackers who hacked A-bank the other day have just come to us. They suck…», noted Gorohovsky.
On the night of February 15-16, A-Bank, which has over 4 million customers, was subjected to a large-scale hacker attack. As a result, some customers faced unauthorized debiting of funds from their accounts.
«This was a new attack, previously unknown to the banking system. However, we can now confidently state: we coped, repelled it, and ruled out the possibility of similar attempts in the future,» the bank’s press service reported, adding that all the stolen funds were returned.
As Forbes Ukraine reports, A-Bank is a systemically important bank, which ranks 19th in the banking system in terms of net assets of UAH 45.8 billion and is owned by the Surkis family.
According to cybersecurity experts, the attack on A-bank could have been related to foreign services that allow payments by entering payment card numbers. Some of them are trusted by payment systems, so they may not use 3D Secure security technology.
Hackers can try to pick card numbers: the issuing bank can be determined by the first six digits of the card, then brute-force algorithms substitute other digits and check the card’s checksum. Some combinations turn out to be valid and make payments.
Recall that in 2024, monobank suffered a large-scale DDOS attack that lasted three days. AWS (Amazon Web Services) employees were involved in repelling it.
