A developer asked AI agent Claude Code to create an app to monitor his computer's temperature, but instead learned why his MacBook had been running so poorly lately. It turned out that the device was running a cryptominer without his knowledge, using the processor's power to mine cryptocurrency.

This was reported by a Reddit user under the nickname UntilHEX.

While testing a new application, Claude Code received readings from the laptop’s temperature sensors. The numbers were suspiciously high, so the AI agent decided to check what was loading the processor. That’s how he found XMRig, a cryptocurrency mining program. According to the agent, it was using about 1175% of the processor’s power. Because of this, the processor temperature reached 112 degrees Celsius.

“Your Mac is running a cryptominer that I didn’t install,” Claude Code reported. The agent also found that the miner was set to start automatically with the system. The developer later said that Claude Code helped him get rid of the unwanted program almost completely. Only one file had to be deleted manually because the AI agent didn’t have access to it.

Previously, dev.ua wrote about a Ukrainian developer who used AI to detect malicious code in a test task from a potential employer.
