“Colleagues are already deploying DGU, reacting to changes.” Mobile operators told how they are dealing with the consequences of enemy shelling during a blackout in Kyiv and beyond
According to the press service of Vodafone Ukraine, during the night and morning, about a hundred base stations of the mobile operator switched to battery power in Kyiv, Kyiv region, Poltava, Kharkiv, and Sumy.
According to the press service of Vodafone Ukraine, during the night and morning, about a hundred base stations of the mobile operator switched to battery power in Kyiv, Kyiv region, Poltava, Kharkiv, and Sumy.
According to the operator, the backup power sources have been working since last night in accordance with the requirements and standards, and the further situation depends on the state of the power system.
«Colleagues are already deploying DGUs (diesel generator sets — Ed.), reacting to changes. Now the situation is unchanged, Vodafone specialists are working in an enhanced mode,» the operator’s press service told dev.ua.
The operator also named the main factors that affect the operation of the network during power outages:
duration of the outage — even new batteries are completely discharged in 6-8 hours; frequency of outages — if a new outage occurs within two hours of the outage, the batteries simply do not have time to charge;
number of subscribers — in different regions, operators have different market shares, respectively, in regions with a larger number of customers, the network is more extensive, which requires more resources for maintenance (power generation);
The load on the network increases several times when, with a power outage, home WiFi disappears and users switch to mobile Internet. Then the network experiences an avalanche-like increase in load, which leads to both a decrease in speed for each consumer and a faster discharge of the base station batteries with their subsequent shutdown.
At the same time, Vodafone Ukraine also emphasized that, thanks to the previously carried out work and modernization, network availability in regions that are not in the combat zone remains high even during periods of mass emergency power outages, like today.
In turn, the press service of the mobile operator lifecell commented that the situation in Kyiv, in particular on the left bank of the capital, is difficult, but remains under control.
«In general, we have batteries installed at our sites that maintain communication for up to 10 hours. Where the batteries run out, problems may occur, because it is impossible to power all sites from generators. In cities, the vast majority of them are on rooftops. And in Kyiv, power is absent in some places from 2 a.m…», explained the lifecell press service in response to questions from dev.ua journalists.
