The publication «Economic Truth» has received a government resolution with the dates for the complete shutdown of 3G technology in Ukraine and the transition to 5G. Mobile operators are already gradually abandoning outdated networks.
As reported by «Ekonomichna Pravda», the document states that the frequencies for IMT-2000 (3G) technology are planned to be reoriented to modern standards, in particular IMT-2020 (5G). This will increase data transmission, more efficient use of the spectrum, and lower costs per unit of traffic.
The final shutdown of 3G is scheduled for December 31, 2030. The Ministry of Digital Affairs believes that a specific date for the termination of 3G support will allow operators to more clearly plan network modernization, avoid technological lag, and facilitate the transition of subscribers to modern communication standards.
Operators began to gradually turn off 3G in early 2025 — in certain settlements and regions.
In May 2025, it became known that Ukrainian mobile operators are gradually abandoning support for the 3G network in favor of faster 4G. In particular , Kyivstar published specific shutdown dates in different regions of Ukraine. It is noted that this speeds up 4G by 62%.
Push-button phones operating on 2G networks will retain call and SMS functions even after 3G is disabled. In areas where only 3G coverage is available, the technology will not be disabled until 4G is available there.
