Microsoft has launched an open LINGUA competition to address the underrepresentation of European languages in artificial intelligence. Ukraine is one of the countries whose organizations can participate and receive $50,000 in funding.
«As the world becomes more digital, much of Europe’s linguistic and cultural diversity risks being left behind. Most web content—the primary source of training data for today’s large language models (LLMs)—is in English. Much of this content reflects an American perspective», Microsoft Vice President and President Brad Smith wrote in a blog post.
European leaders have previously acknowledged that without urgent action, this imbalance is not only a cultural but also a commercial problem; and artificial intelligence that «does not understand European languages, history and values» cannot fully serve people, business and the future of Europe.
LINGUA is an invitation for researchers, NGOs, cultural institutions, and startups to create high-quality open datasets that will help digitally underserved languages, including Ukrainian, strengthen their presence in the world of AI.
