Nvidia employee tried to smuggle AI chips to China
An employee of the American corporation Nvidia was detained in Taiwan on suspicion of involvement in a scheme to smuggle artificial intelligence chips to China.
An employee of the American corporation Nvidia was detained in Taiwan on suspicion of involvement in a scheme to smuggle artificial intelligence chips to China.
This was reported by Bloomberg with reference to the Keelung City Prosecutor’s Office. According to the investigation, the courts have already granted a request for the arrest of a suspect named Chan.
Law enforcement officers searched his home on July 24. The employee is suspected of forgery and breach of trust. However, the prosecutor’s office has not yet brought formal charges against Nvidia itself or other legal entities.
This is the first known case of law enforcement taking legal action directly against an Nvidia employee. Taiwan has previously detained employees of Super Micro Computer Inc., an artificial intelligence server distributor, and a data center operator.
The investigation is part of at least eight cases involving illegal trafficking of Nvidia chips in four jurisdictions. Authorities in the United States and Taiwan are actively cracking down on a black market for semiconductors, the existence of which Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has previously denied.
