For Oleksandr Kosovan, CEO of the Kyiv-based MacPaw company, the worst-case scenario for his business is that his country is «forced into a deal that makes no sense for Ukraine.» He argues that such a move would give an «exhausted» Russia time to regroup and expand the scope of the war.
Kosovan said his company, which employs 500 people, continues to grow, albeit at a slower pace than before the Russian invasion in 2022. The MacPaw CEO is also investing in Ukrainian startups through his venture fund SMRK as other sources of capital dry up. «We continue to innovate and create products,» Kosovan says.
He recalled that his country’s cities and businesses were damaged but far from destroyed. Kosovan admitted that he had evacuated his wife and children to Spain and that 200 of his employees were working outside the country. «We have reduced the growth rate from 40% per year to about 5%,» he said, adding that he expects better growth this year.
Oleksandr wants the world to know about the depth and strength of Ukraine’s tech sector. He even published a book called «Innovation in Isolation: A History of Ukrainian IT from the 1940s to the Present .» It’s available now on Amazon. According to him, Ukrainian companies are «experimenting with new technologies on the battlefield that could help improve the security of other countries.»
