Image of Mars' surface with 'square structure' goes viral on the internet. Conspiracy theorists are already building theories, and Musk wants to send astronauts
An image of the surface of Mars taken by NASA’s Mars Orbiter has gone viral on Reddit and Elon Musk’s Twitter account, showing a geometrically regular shape. Experts have yet to offer an official scientific explanation for what the structure is, but that hasn’t stopped conspiracy theorists from claiming it’s proof of an alien civilization on Mars.

In particular, the author of the world’s most popular podcast, Joe Rogan, who is often criticized for popularizing conspiracy theories, disinformation about COVID-19, and inviting guests who spread pseudoscientific theories, reacted to the photo with a «square structure» on Mars. This is reported by the Daily Mail.
«This is f***ing wild,» Rogan wrote on X (Twitter). His longtime friend, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, commented on the post, saying that astronauts should be sent to Mars for research.
According to artificial intelligence calculations, the «square structure» measures 235 meters on each side. Conspiracy theorists are already comparing this structure to the Great Pyramid in Egypt, which is approximately 230 meters on each side. AI calculations also show that the structure on Mars could have the same 51.5-degree tilt as the Great Pyramid.

Little is known about this structure, but it is not the only square shape found in nature. Thousands of natural shapes resembling squares and rectangles can be found on the Tasmanian Peninsula in Australia. The tile-like rocks are mostly composed of siltstone and were formed about 300 million years ago after being disturbed by the movement of the Earth.

Although the structure on Mars could have formed naturally, space conspiracy theorists cite it as evidence to support their unsubstantiated claims of an ancient Martian civilization.
Some conspiracy theorists suggest it could be a visualization artifact, while others claim it is the remains of an alien civilization. However, there is a long history of misinterpretation of images taken on Mars.
Previously, NASA photos have seen human faces, «spiders,» and other strange shapes. All of them have received a scientific explanation, such as a deceptive effect created by light and shadows.
Elon Musk previously said that SpaceX would make its first uncrewed flight to Mars in two years. He had previously planned to send people to Mars as early as 2024. In October, Donald Trump promised that the United States would land on Mars by the end of his second term if re-elected.
