Kyivstar is testing data transmission via satellite — messengers will work without mobile coverage thanks to Light Data
Kyivstar received permission from the regulator and began testing Light Data, the next stage of Starlink Direct to Cell technology. While the first stage made it possible to send SMS without a terrestrial network, now we are talking about the full operation of messengers and OTT applications via a satellite channel.

While the first stage made it possible to send SMS without a terrestrial network, now we are talking about the full operation of messengers and OTT applications via a satellite channel.
Light Data is a special data transfer mode in which applications adapt to the satellite channel. Video calls are not available in this mode, but text communication and media file sharing work in real time. The technology works anywhere there is an open sky — regardless of the presence of mobile coverage.
Testing is being conducted by Kyivstar engineers. The first services may become available to subscribers this year. The priority for connection is critical services and government applications. In order for applications to work correctly via the satellite channel, developers must adapt them to the technical requirements — Kyivstar is already conducting relevant negotiations with smartphone manufacturers and application authors.
Head of the National Energy Commission Lilia Malyon noted that Ukraine is one of the first countries in Europe that is not just testing Direct to Cell, but is consistently expanding its application.
