According to Interesting Engineering, the new battery uses what the team of scientists calls «organic» electrodes with neutral, non-toxic electrolytes.
Unlike lithium-ion and other popular batteries, this battery is neither acidic nor flammable. If the technology can be scaled up, it could be a revolutionary development.
The publication reminds that the «minus» of lithium-ion batteries is also their environmental hazard and degradation, which allows for only 1,000 to 3,000 charging cycles.
Water-based batteries already developed, which are similar in technology to the new invention of Chinese scientists, are much safer — they are non-flammable and contain few toxic materials, but they have traditionally had problems with sufficient service life. However, the new battery, with a claimed 120,000 charge cycles, is a huge leap in performance that could mean that a single water-based battery could last at least a decade.
As dev.ua previously wrote, Toyota plans to release solid-state batteries in 2027–2028 with a battery life of up to 40 years and a range of 1,000 km.
