Ukrainian developer Oleksandr Vovchuk created "Lisovichok" — a free application for mushroom pickers. It allows you to save mushroom locations, record routes through the forest, add photos of finds, and return to places where you previously managed to find mushrooms. The application also works offline.
The developer, who posts on Threads under the nickname pdm.inthewoods, announced the launch on October 6. According to him, he created the tool primarily for himself, as he decided to explore new mushroom locations and wanted to better remember where he had already been, where he planned to go, and where he had found mushrooms during previous hikes.
Before a hike, the user can download a section of the satellite map to use it without an internet connection. When the mushroom picker arrives in the forest, he starts recording the hike and marks the place where he left the car on the map. The application then records the route.
If the user finds mushrooms, simply click the "Found" button, select the species, and enter the quantity. The find will appear on the map at the location where it was recorded.
If mushrooms are found near an already saved location, the app can combine the finds into one mushroom spot and store their history. This way, the user can track what and where they found during different hikes.
After the walk is complete, the information is saved in a journal. There you can view the route, finds, photos, time and distance traveled.
A special feature of the application is the storage of data directly on the phone. According to the developer, an account is not required to use "Lisovichko", and saved places, routes, photos and finds remain on the device.
This also means that users don’t have to share their mushroom locations with the service or other people. For those who don’t want to reveal their verified "quiet hunting" spots, this could be one of the app’s main advantages.
"The Forester" is currently available for iPhone in the App Store and is free. At the time of publication, the developer said that an Android version was in the works: he planned to start testing it in the forest that same week.
