This was reported by Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known analyst who specializes in Apple products.
According to him, the company plans to release a new 13-inch laptop with the A18 Pro chip in late 2025 or early 2026.
The A18 Pro, which powers the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, scored 3,400 points in single-core mode in the Geekbench 6 test and 8,500-8,600 in multi-core mode, writes Tom's Hardware.
These single-core scores are only slightly lower than the M4, which ranges from 3,400 to 3,700 points on the same test, depending on which Mac it's installed on. The multi-core score is much closer to the original generation M1, which also sits around 8,500.
Kuo claims that Apple plans to sell 5-7 million units in 2026. It's unclear how much they might cost, but they'll likely be entry-level laptops that will cost less than the $999 MacBook Air. They'll have to be cheap enough to compete. The M3 MacBook Air was previously discounted to $799 on sale. Apple's current available option is at Walmart, where it's selling the M1 MacBook Air with the older design, 256GB of storage, and 8GB of RAM for $649.
The lower price could allow Apple to compete with cheaper Chromebooks and mid-range Windows laptops in education and for those who may only use their laptops for email, web browsing, and other simple tasks.
