The new MacBook Neo is designed to compete in the niche of budget laptops on Windows and Chromebooks, and may interest students who do not have the funds for a MacBook Air for over $ 1000.
According to The Verge, Apple’s solution has a 13-inch display (2408×1506), 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB or 512 GB of storage, a Magic Keyboard, a multi-touch trackpad, a 1080p camera, two USB-C ports (one USB 3 and one USB 2), a headphone jack, and new side speakers with support for surround sound and Dolby Atmos. It is available in four colors: silver, indigo, pink, and citrus, each of which has a keyboard of the corresponding color.
Instead of the fast Thunderbolt 4 ports found on the MacBook Air, the Neo has a pair of slower USB-C ports. Users get a 10Gbps USB 3 port and a 480Mbps USB 2 port, as well as a headphone jack. Additionally, the Neo’s keyboard is not backlit.
Apple says the MacBook Neo can last up to 16 hours. Web browsing battery life was tested using 25 popular websites while connected to Wi-Fi. Streaming video battery life was tested using 1080p content in Safari while connected to Wi-Fi. All systems were tested with display brightness set to 8 clicks from the lowest setting.
The MacBook Neo costs $599 ($499 with a student discount). The 512GB version costs an additional $100 and adds Touch ID. Apple has already opened pre-orders for the new product, and its sales will start on March 11.
