Ukrainian developer created an AR eye trainer app. How it works
Ukrainian developer Dmytro Balyuk has created a mobile application called «Effective Eye Exercises», which helps users do exercises to relieve fatigue after working at a computer. The application uses Augmented Reality (AR) technology and turns eye exercises into an interactive game.
Ukrainian developer Dmytro Balyuk has created a mobile application called «Effective Eye Exercises», which helps users do exercises to relieve fatigue after working at a computer. The application uses Augmented Reality (AR) technology and turns eye exercises into an interactive game.
According to the developer, the idea for the service came from personal experience.
The entire development of the service was carried out by one developer — Dmytro Balyuk.
It took about three months to create the first version of the application. The project is positioned as Ukrainian and is being developed from Kyiv.
The idea was born out of screen fatigue
Baluk told dev.ua that he spends a lot of time at the computer and began to experience constant eye fatigue. After consulting with an ophthalmologist, he learned that regular exercises help relieve tension from the eye muscles.
That’s how the idea came to create an app that would help people form the healthy habit of regularly doing eye exercises.
The target audience of the service is everyone who works a lot at a computer or uses smartphones.
How the app works
The service is based on a set of popular eye exercises. The user goes through a short interactive session where they need to perform eye movements to complete the workout.
The main feature is the use of AR mechanics, which turns exercises into a kind of game.
The developer also faced a moderation challenge at Apple when launching the app. During the App Store review process, they had to prove that the app was not a medical product or treatment, but merely offered standard eye exercises.
Business model and metrics
The app works on a subscription model. The cost is approximately $1.50 per month. The product has no direct «payback» for the user, as its main goal is to form a habit of taking care of eye health.
The main metric for the team is the number of users who complete the training.
In 2025, the app had over 1,100 unique users.
Initially, the application operated in a completely free format with advertising. Later, the model was changed: first to a paid subscription without a free version, and later to a hybrid model — subscription plus basic free access, which had a positive impact on ASO.
Why is there no Android version?
According to the developer, one of the most difficult decisions over the past year was to abandon scaling to Android. The reason is the complexity of implementing AR mechanics and the predicted lower payback on this platform.
In the next 2–3 years, the team plans to develop the product moderately but steadily.
Baluk believes that the demand for such services will only grow, as more and more people spend a significant part of their day in front of screens.
