As Gizmodo notes, Musk has been talking about creating a flying car since at least 2014, and is associated with the Tesla Roadster, the first generation of which was produced from 2008 to 2012.
When Rogan asked the Tesla CEO about the Roadster’s status, Musk made it clear that he wanted it to fly. But it took him a while during the conversation to actually reveal what he was talking about.
«We’re getting close to…demonstrating the prototype. One thing I can guarantee is that the demonstration of this product will be unforgettable. Unforgettable,» Musk said with long pauses.
Joe Rogan didn’t understand what the billionaire was hinting at, so he gave a hint.
«Well, you know, my friend Peter Thiel once remarked that in the future there should be flying cars, but we don’t have flying cars… I mean, if Peter wants a flying car, we should be able to buy one,» said the Tesla CEO.
Elon Musk declined to comment on whether the car will have retractable wings, but said he hopes to show a prototype by the end of 2025.
Earlier, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that he couldn’t wait for the release of the second-generation Tesla Roadster and applied for a refund for a pre-order of the car that he made more than seven years ago. However, for some reason, it was not accepted.
Production of the new Roadster was originally scheduled to begin in 2020, but has been repeatedly delayed. Musk told investors in October 2024 that Tesla was finalizing the Roadster design.
Later, on X (Twitter), Elon Musk reported that Altman still received his money back for the Tesla Roadster pre-order: «You forgot to mention that this issue [with the application] was resolved and you received a refund within 24 hours. But that’s in your nature.»
