Meta plans to lay the world's longest submarine cable around the Earth at a depth of 7 km. 50,000 km will connect the USA, India, South Africa, Brazil

As reported by the Meta press service, the technology giant called the project Waterworth and stated that the Internet cable will connect the United States, India, South Africa, Brazil, and other regions, and will also become the longest in the world.

Meta said its new cable project would provide «industry-leading connectivity» to five major continents and help support artificial intelligence.

«The Waterworth Project will be a multi-billion dollar, multi-year investment to strengthen the scale and reliability of the world’s digital highways by opening three new ocean corridors with the high-speed connectivity needed to deliver AI innovations around the world,» Meta’s press service noted.

Undersea cable projects like the Waterworth Project are the backbone of the global digital infrastructure, carrying over 95% of intercontinental traffic across the world’s oceans, seamlessly enabling digital communication, video streaming, online transactions, and more.

Meta notes that over the past decade, it has innovated infrastructure with partners, developing more than 20 submarine cables. This includes multiple deployments of industry-leading 24-pair submarine cables — compared to the typical 8-16 pairs of fibers in other new systems. These investments provide unparalleled connectivity to meet the growing digital needs of our world.

As part of the Waterworth Corporation project, we continue to improve the engineering design to ensure the cable’s resilience, which will allow us to build the world’s longest 24-pair cable and increase the overall speed of deployment.

«We are also deploying a first-of-its-kind routing, maximizing the length of cable laid at great depths — up to 7,000 m — and using advanced sinking techniques in high-risk areas, such as shallow water near the coast, to avoid damage from ship anchors and other hazards,» the company said in a statement.

The company adds that thanks to the Waterworth project, they will ensure that the benefits of AI and other new technologies are available to everyone, regardless of where they live or work.
