The performance of the new Avocado AI model is currently at a level between Google's Gemini 2.5 and Gemini 3, forcing the company to delay its launch until May or June, sources told Reuters.
The delay in the schedule comes despite the company making massive investments in the development of artificial intelligence. Back in January, Meta budgeted for a year of capital expenditures of between $115 billion and $135 billion to create “superintelligence,” the level at which AI can surpass humans in mental abilities.
Avocado is being developed by an internal TBD group , a small division within AI Superintelligence Labs. It is led by Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer Alexander Wang . Avocado could launch as a closed model. But right now it lags behind the latest developments from competitors.
“As we have stated publicly, our next model will be high-quality, but more importantly, it will demonstrate the rapid trajectory of our development. After that, we will confidently expand the boundaries of what is possible throughout the year, continuing to release new models. We are excited that people will soon see what we are preparing,” a Meta representative told Reuters.
