Microsoft forced to extend Windows 10 support program
Official support for Windows 10 ended in 2025. After that, Microsoft provided users with an additional year of extended updates as part of the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program.
This program was intended to be a temporary measure for those who were still undecided whether to buy a new device, upgrade to a newer version of Windows, or change operating system altogether. It expired on October 12, 2026.
However, according to recent changes to the ESU support page , the period for providing these updates has been extended for another year.

Microsoft's decision to extend the ESU program for Windows 10 for another year indicates that users are not too eager for change, writes Cybernews.
"I can't afford a new computer," wrote one Reddit user in a discussion on the topic "why are so many people choosing not to upgrade to Windows 11?"
To use Windows 11, some users need to purchase a new device that supports specific processor technologies and a TPM (Trusted Platform Module).
"It just gives me a message that my computer doesn't support it. My PC, although old, handles everything else just fine, including games. So I have no incentive or reason to upgrade for the sake of it," added another Reddit user.
The current shortage of storage and RAM caused by the development of artificial intelligence makes upgrading devices an even more difficult task due to rising prices.
However, the new hardware requirements aren't the only reason why some people are refusing to upgrade to Windows 11.
"I'm held back by the lack of attractive new features, as well as concerns about privacy and the amount of advertising," added another netizen.
Some Reddit contributors also noted that the reason for their reluctance to upgrade to Windows 11 is the integration of Microsoft's artificial intelligence features.
"It's generally slower than Windows 10, has fewer features, more bloatware, and updates break something every two weeks. Windows 10 still works great and I still get security updates," added another user.
Windows 11 was reported to have several issues, including a localhost crash that prevented locally running applications from connecting to the user's network.
Due to the troubles with Windows 11, the company was even forced to limit the implementation of some artificial intelligence-based features.

30-year-old code from the mid-90s is still the foundation of Windows 11. The ancient Win32 API remains the core of the system, but Microsoft's CTO claims that in 2026 it is "as relevant as ever"
