Microsoft Corp. has announced a voluntary redundancy program for about 60,000 employees, as the tech giant seeks to balance its massive investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure with financial stability and capital efficiency.
Microsoft Corp. has announced a voluntary redundancy program for about 60,000 employees, as the tech giant seeks to balance its massive investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure with financial stability and capital efficiency.
According to CNBC, citing its own sources, the offer applies to employees in the United States, Canada, India and the United Kingdom whose job level is 70 or lower (which covers positions up to and including the level of vice president). In total, the program covers about 27% of Microsoft's total workforce, which currently numbers 223,000 people. According to insiders, the company has not set a specific target for the number of layoffs.
Employees have until early December to make a decision, and those who agree to the proposed terms will leave the company on December 31. Some marketing, sales, and engineering teams have chosen not to participate in this program.
The need for optimization comes amid a surge in data center spending to meet the high demand for AI computing. Microsoft is a key cloud provider for developers such as Anthropic and OpenAI. The corporation's capital expenditures for the September quarter are expected to exceed $50 billion (compared to $34.9 billion in the same period last year), putting a significant strain on the company's budget.
“The voluntary exit offer reflects an important part of how we are evolving our approach to change: creating greater flexibility and, where possible, offering more ways for employees to shape the next phase of their careers,” Amy Coleman, Microsoft’s executive vice president and chief human resources officer, said in an internal letter.
