In Zhytomyr region, law enforcement officers have uncovered a large-scale electricity theft scheme organized by a local resident. The man set up powerful crypto farms that consumed electricity bypassing meters, causing the state losses of almost 9 million hryvnias.
According to the Prosecutor General's Office, according to the investigation, the suspect turned his own home into a cryptocurrency mining site. He used powerful industrial equipment, but paid for electricity as an ordinary household consumer. To hide the real consumption, the attacker installed a special device in the meter that allowed him to stop the energy metering.
Later, the man rented a workshop with his own transformer substation, where he equipped new farms, using a similar scheme of interfering with the operation of power grids.
It is worth noting that this is not the first suspicion for the defendant. In November 2025, law enforcement officers had already informed him of suspicion for a similar crime - at that time the amount of damage was estimated at 2.3 million UAH. However, as further investigation revealed, the scale of the activity was much larger.
Under the procedural guidance of the Zhytomyr District Prosecutor's Office, the man was notified of new suspicion under several articles of the Criminal Code:
Fraud on a particularly large scale.
Theft of electrical energy.
Unauthorized interference in the operation of electronic communications networks during martial law.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
