An enthusiast who goes by the nickname Blighted Agent has found a way to save money on expensive RAM. He bought used laptop memory for $120 and converted it into a much faster desktop kit. Similar high-speed kits cost around $1,000.

This is reported by Tom's Hardware. The enthusiast posted a video of the experiment on YouTube.

Blighted Agent purchased two SK hynix DDR5 memory modules totaling 32GB on Facebook Marketplace. However, they were designed for laptops and would not fit into regular desktop slots.

So he decided to use their chips to build his own computer memory. He ordered two blank boards for about $16 each and cooling radiators for $18 on AliExpress. In total, the enthusiast spent about $175 on all the parts.

Then came the hard part. Blighted Agent removed 16 memory chips from the old modules, cleaned them of solder, and installed them on new boards. He also transferred the memory information chips so that the computer could recognize them.

Everything worked on the first try. But Blighted Agent didn't stop there.

The memory was initially clocked at DDR5-5600, but after some tweaking, the enthusiast overclocked it to DDR5-7800. DDR5 is a standard for RAM, and the numbers 5600 and 7800 indicate how many millions of times per second it can transfer data. So the enthusiast increased the data transfer rate by almost 39%.

This allows the processor to retrieve the necessary information from RAM faster, which sometimes helps games or demanding programs run faster. Blighted Agent tested the performance of the reworked memory under load for an hour and a half and found no problems.

Previously, dev.ua wrote that a Reddit user accidentally found RAM worth about $12,000 in his garage.
