"The ability to make calls will definitely remain". Military expert comments on restrictions on mobile networks to combat Russian drones

Radio technology specialist, military and engineer Serhiy «Flash» Bezkrestnov believes that mobile communications will not be turned off in Ukraine in the near future to counter Russian drones that use the networks of Ukrainian operators.

It was previously reported that Ukraine is considering legislative changes that would require the identification of all mobile phone users, both new and existing. The initiative was discussed by the parliamentary subcommittee on cybersecurity in the context of combating the use of mobile networks by hostile drones.

«Tomorrow, no one will turn off mobile communications throughout the country. There is no need to panic unnecessarily», — the expert wrote. According to him, the relevant Verkhovna Rada committee is discussing this issue, but «everyone understands the importance of mobile communications» for the military, civilians, and critical infrastructure.

«If the decision is made in the future, the ability to make calls will definitely remain. It will be possible to call an ambulance or fire department or call loved ones,» says Flash.

He added that now it is necessary to prepare for any future scenarios of the Russian use of Shahed drones. The specialist emphasized that no one will turn off all mobile communications «tomorrow» or in a week.

Ukrainian intelligence services have repeatedly recorded cases of enemy drones using mobile signals for navigation or data transmission. This makes the drones invulnerable to electronic warfare, they no longer rely on GPS, are guided by artificial intelligence, and use the Internet of Ukrainian mobile operators .

SIM cards that are not tied to a person simplify such activities, as well as make it difficult to detect drone operators. According to Oleksandr Fedienko, head of the subcommittee on cybersecurity, government communications and cryptographic information protection, more than 80% of mobile phone users in Ukraine are unidentified. About 40% of them use their numbers as financial ones to log in to banking applications.

We would like to remind you that dev.ua contacted the press services of mobile operators with a request to comment on the possible shutdown of mobile communications and the Internet in the territories where enemy UAVs fly, and to confirm whether they are indeed preparing such scenarios.
