"Foreign investors are most interested in software for Defense Tech": the head of Brave1 on the results of the cluster's work for one and a half years and the directions in which investors are ready to invest

During the year and a half of its existence, the Ukrainian defense technology cluster Brave1 began to cooperate with more than 240 investors from more than 30 countries. Software development for Defense Tech is one of the areas that investors are most interested in.

Brave1 head Nataliya Kushnerska told LIGA.net about it.

The results of the Brave1 defense technology cluster for one and a half years: briefly in numbers

Brave1 was introduced in April 2023 and launched in July, during this time:

  • more than 3,100 developments of domestic innovators in the field of Defense Tech were registered;
  • about 250 applicants for developer registration on the Brave1 platform were denied. Among the reasons for refusal are connections with Russia and Belarus, or the applicants did not make timely changes to their application, which the cluster team requested;
  • more than 1,400 private manufacturers of Defense Tech solutions are registered, of which more than 500 UAV manufacturers, more than 180 developers of ground-based robotic complexes, and more than 140 EW equipment manufacturers work in Ukraine;
  • initially, producers could receive only $5,000 or $25,000, today grants in the amount of UAH 4 million and UAH 8 million are available to developers.
  • program participants have already received 394 grants worth UAH 420.3 million;
  • in 2024 contributed to the attraction of more than $25 million of investments in Ukrainian Defense Tech. This is five times more than last year;
  • it is expected that by the end of the year the investment indicator will exceed $50 million;
  • the cluster already works with more than 240 investors from more than 30 countries.

What areas are most interesting to investors

Foreign investors are most interested in software for Defense Tech due to ease of scaling and wider sales opportunities.

"It can be focused not only on government contracts, but also on sales to other manufacturers, which greatly simplifies the path to contracts, revenues and rapid growth," Kushnerska added.

Another area is components for complex technological systems.

“Investors are actively interested in drone components such as cameras and motors. This simplifies investment, as such components often fall under the concept of Dual-Use (dual-use technologies. — Ed.), which removes some restrictions on investments in this area,” explained the head of Brave1.

If you look at the directions, the key today are unmanned aerial vehicles and solutions aimed at combating drones.

Currently, the cluster has a number of priorities , including: missiles, "anti-missiles", lasers, surface and underwater drones, "drone swarm" technology, autonomous attack systems, carrier drones, anti-aircraft missiles, "Ukrainian Mavic" and guided munitions.

"This is what the Ukrainian military needs most, as well as what can give the Security and Defense Forces an advantage over the enemy," Kushnerska said.
