When Google released its Gemini 2.5 Flash model in August, it became popular thanks to its image generation model, codenamed Nano Banana. It caught the attention of users with its exceptional image generation capabilities.
Business Insider believes that the success of this model could be bad news for Adobe, which sells image processing software. Data from analytics firm Appfigures shows that while Gemini downloads have skyrocketed since the release of Nano Banana, downloads of Firefly, Adobe’s generative AI-powered image and video processing app, have begun to decline.
While it is not clear whether Firefly’s decline is solely due to Nano Banana, the timing of their occurrences is consistent. Firefly has been growing since its launch in June, with downloads up 150% in August compared to the previous month. Gemini grew by just 20% over the same period. The data includes downloads from both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
After Google released Nano Banana for the Gemini app on August 26, Firefly downloads dropped by more than half in the following week, while the Google app skyrocketed in popularity.
As of October 6, Gemini downloads were up 331% compared to the last week of July, while Firefly downloads were down 68% — the lowest since Nano Banana — according to Appfigures.
To further illustrate this situation, according to Appfigures, Google’s Gemini app was downloaded 6.1 million times more last week than the week the new image model was integrated, while Firefly downloads decreased by 2 million.
It was previously reported that Adobe could soon face serious problems due to competitors' investments in artificial intelligence technologies. Graphic design platforms Figma and Canva have attracted «tens and hundreds of millions of monthly users» thanks to the integration of AI agents and the capabilities they promise.
