Starting today, the voltage standard in Ukraine is changing. What does this mean? Here are 5 questions everyone should know the answer to

Starting July 1, 2025, the voltage standard in the electrical network will officially change in Ukraine. What does this mean for consumers? Do I need to change my devices? And who is responsible if the voltage «jumps»? Let’s break it down point by point.

Starting July 1, 2025, the voltage standard in the electrical network will officially change in Ukraine. What does this mean for consumers? Do I need to change my devices? And who is responsible if the voltage «jumps»? Let’s break it down point by point.

What exactly is changing?

Instead of 220/380 V, a new standard is in effect — 230 V in everyday life and 400 V in industry.

220 V and 230 V are the phase voltage that reaches the household consumer through a regular outlet, and 380 V and 400 V are linear, or three-phase voltage, which is used mostly in enterprises. If earlier transformers reduced the voltage to 380 V and 220 V reached the houses, now they will reduce it to 400 V — and household consumers will receive 230 V.

The National Commission for Energy and Utilities Regulatory (NKREK) noted that along with the voltage standard, the limits of permissible deviation will also be updated: they will be from 207 V to 253 V, i.e. ±10%.

Why is this necessary?

First, the quality and stability of energy supply is improving.

Secondly, the need for stabilizers is reduced.

Third, Ukraine is harmonizing standards with the EU energy system. Yes. All EU countries have long been operating under the 230/400 V standard. Ukraine is simply «tightening» the parameters to a single system.

«These changes are expected to have a positive impact on the quality of electricity supply. Stable voltage will reduce the risk of damage to household appliances sensitive to fluctuations, and will also reduce the need for additional protective equipment, such as stabilizers,» the National Commission for State Regulation in the Spheres of Energy and Utilities (NKREKP) noted.

In addition, this will help increase energy efficiency — electrical appliances will be able to operate in optimal mode, without overloads and power losses, the NEURC added.

Do you need to change anything at home?

«Should we worry about household appliances? Absolutely not. Modern appliances are mainly manufactured according to EU standards, where 230 V has been the norm for many years. The most important thing is not the number itself, but the stability of the voltage in the network,» DTEK explained.

At the same time, the company noted that within the framework of the new voltage standard, a deviation of 10% is now possible — from 207 V to 253 V, which must be taken into account when setting up voltage relays in homes.

Most modern household appliances are already designed for a range of 200–250 V. If you have very old (Soviet) appliances, you should consult an electrician.

Will the payment amount change?

No. Electricity is paid for by kilowatt-hours consumed, not by voltage level.

What to do if the voltage is unstable or outside the normal range?

The new standard allows for deviations within 207–253 V. If the voltage is higher or lower, this is a violation. To eliminate the violations, you should contact the management company/OSBB or the distribution system operator (oblenergo). They are obliged to resolve the problem within 15 business days.
