New GPT-4.1 AI models for programming are now available in ChatGPT

In April, OpenAI introduced new AI models in the GPT-4.1 family to developers, but they were only available through the OpenAI API. Now, the company has launched them in ChatGPT.
OpenAI is rolling out GPT-4.1 to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers, and GPT-4.1 mini to free and paid users on ChatGPT, TechCrunch reports .
At the same time, the company is removing GPT-4.0 mini from ChatGPT as a result of this update.
After launching these models in April, the company faced criticism from the AI research community for releasing GPT-4.1 without a security report. These researchers argued that OpenAI was lowering its standards for transparency in its AI models. However, OpenAI argued at the time that, despite GPT-4.1’s improved performance and speed compared to GPT-4o, the model was not advanced and therefore did not require the same security reporting as more powerful models.
“GPT-4.1 does not introduce new modalities or ways to interact with the model and does not outperform o3 in intelligence,” wrote Johannes Heidecke, head of security systems at OpenAI, in a post on X. “This means that the security considerations here, while significant, are different from those of advanced models.”
OpenAI is now publishing more information about GPT-4.1 and all of its AI models. Yesterday, OpenAI committed to publishing the results of its internal security assessments of its AI models more frequently as part of an effort to increase transparency. These results will be posted in the new Security Assessment Center, which OpenAI also launched yesterday.
