A new way to attract talent: to compensate for low salaries, an IT company in Japan offers free alcohol at work, and the boss even makes a toast
To compete with big IT companies in the war for young talent, one small tech company in Osaka, Japan, is offering its employees free alcoholic drinks during working hours and a special «hangover pass» that allows them to be late for work if they have a hangover.
To compete with big IT companies in the war for young talent, one small tech company in Osaka, Japan, is offering its employees free alcoholic drinks during working hours and a special «hangover pass» that allows them to be late for work if they have a hangover.
Drunkenness at work is usually frowned upon, but not at Trust Ring Co, Ltd, a small technology company in Osaka. The company can’t offer salaries on par with big IT companies, so it’s come up with another way to attract talented young IT professionals to the team, writes Oddity Central.
«Thanks to the 'hangover leave' system, I can return to work at 12 o’clock,» one employee recently told local broadcaster Kansai TV. «I can sleep for another 2-3 hours and come back to work with a clear mind. I feel like I’ll be more efficient.»
The CEO of Trust Ring Co., Ltd. explained that he came up with these unusual benefits because he couldn’t afford to pay his employees more. Attempts to compete with large corporations on salary levels were losing, so he had to offer people something they value more than money. He brings the drinks himself and happily toasts with his employees.
«The starting salary at our company is 222,000 yen, which already includes 20 hours of overtime, so it’s almost minimum wage,» the boss says. «We really can’t raise the starting salary, so I think SMEs should focus on attracting talent with similar ideas.»
