"The Foundation for an Independent Communications Network of Ukraine." Ukrainian HIMERA and Danish GomSpace Launch OBRIA NANO Test Satellite into Orbit

Ukrainian communications developer HIMERA, together with Danish company GomSpace, has launched and begun operating the OBRIA NANO spacecraft. This is the first test satellite within the OBRIA initiative, designed to create a sovereign national satellite communications network.

This is stated in the companies' announcement.

The device was launched into orbit on October 1, 2026, using a SpaceX rocket as part of the Transporter-18 mission. The very next day, specialists received the first signals from the satellite, and it is currently successfully undergoing regular tests under the control of a Ukrainian operator.

The main goal of the project is to reduce Ukraine’s strategic dependence on external satellite infrastructure and diversify communication channels in the face of a full-scale war with Russia. The results of the OBRIA NANO tests will be used to design a full-fledged operational satellite constellation.

"For us, this project is not just a satellite launch. It is an opportunity to lay the foundation for an independent communications network for Ukraine. We are starting with testing technologies in orbit, and our long-term goal is to develop capabilities that will strengthen the country’s strategic security and reduce dependence on external communications service providers," said HIMERA co-founder and CEO Misha Rudominsky.

GomSpace CEO Carsten Drachmann added that the partners' common goal is to strengthen Ukraine’s independent communications capabilities and support the country’s long-term security and economic development.

The next key stage of the initiative will be the localization of satellite and ground communication terminal production directly in Ukraine, as well as the deployment of a full-fledged group that will cover the entire territory of the country and complement European networks.
