Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukrainian engineers are working on drones that can carry out missions in ocean waters.
«We started with simple kamikaze sea drones. Then we created drones with turrets that can shoot down helicopters. Now we have drones capable of shooting down Russian fighters from the sea. We have developed boats that carry other drones. We also have boats that strike targets on land from the sea,» Zelensky recalled in an address to the UK parliament.
According to him, Ukrainian manufacturers are currently developing more stable drones that can operate longer and more effectively at sea.
«Soon — and not in the distant future — we will have systems capable of operating even in ocean conditions. We are also actively working on underwater systems,» the president said.
Ukrainian naval drones have been neutralizing the Russian fleet’s superiority in the Black Sea and have effectively forced it to retreat to Russian ports. The most famous water drones are the MAGURA V5, Sea Baby, and Marichka.
The MAGURA V5 of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) inflicted the greatest number of hits on Russian ships. The drones have a speed of up to 80 km/h and a range of up to 800 km.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Sea Baby was used to attack the Crimean bridge and other occupier targets. The drone has a warhead of 400 to 850 kg and a range of over 1,000 km. The Sea Babies can carry MLRS systems (e.g., Grad) to attack coastal targets or operate as a remote minelayer.
«Marichka» is a large underwater drone, up to 6 meters long and with a range of up to 1,000 km. It can «lie on the bottom» in anticipation of a target, and then attack the ship in its most vulnerable part — below the waterline.
«Faced with threats in the Black Sea, we find the right security solutions. And these solutions can also be used to solve your issues, in particular in such difficult situations as today in the Strait of Hormuz. Drones can solve problems that are sometimes beyond the power of even the fleet,» Volodymyr Zelenskyy pointed out.
