OpenAI is preparing changes for users who are underage. They specifically concern conversations about sexual topics or suicide, writes TechCrunch.
Under the new policy, ChatGPT will be trained to no longer engage in “flirty conversations” with underage users, and additional restrictions will be placed on discussions of suicide. If an underage user uses ChatGPT to simulate suicidal scenarios, the service will attempt to contact their parents or, in particularly serious cases, local police.
Separating underage users is a major technical challenge, so OpenAI is developing a long-term system to determine whether someone is older or younger than 18. However, in many uncertain situations, the system will automatically apply rules designed for the younger age group.
The company said in a blog post: “When we detect that a user is under 18, they will automatically be redirected to a version of ChatGPT with age-appropriate policies. This includes blocking sexually explicit content and, in rare cases of acute emotional distress, possibly involving law enforcement to ensure safety. This is not easy to achieve, and even the most advanced systems can sometimes make mistakes in determining age. If we are unsure of a user’s age or have incomplete data, we will take the safer route and default to the underage experience. At the same time, adults will be given the opportunity to verify their age to unlock features intended for adults.”
OpenAI also said it will roll out parental controls by the end of the month. This will allow parents to link their children’s accounts to their own and set block times when the chatbot is unavailable. (OpenAI’s terms of service require users to be at least 13 years old.)
