OpenAI may be developing a smart speaker, glasses, voice recorder, and pin device — and is poaching Apple suppliers and employees to do so

One of the mysterious AI devices that OpenAI is considering developing with former Apple chief designer Jony Ive is “like a smart speaker without a display.” OpenAI has already reached an agreement with Luxshare and is also in talks with Goertek — both companies that assemble products for Apple — to supply components like speaker modules for its upcoming line of AI gadgets.

This is reported by The Information, citing sources directly familiar with the matter.

OpenAI has also been looking at creating glasses, a digital voice recorder, and a wearable pin device, with the first products planned for release in late 2026 or early 2027, the sources said.

Sources also reported that the ChatGPT developer has begun engaging Apple's Chinese supply chain to produce these devices.

In particular, we are talking about Luxshare, which assembles iPhones and AirPods, and Goertek, which is responsible for AirPods, HomePods and Apple Watch. The publication, citing an unnamed source “familiar with the situation,” writes that last month Apple even canceled a meeting with teams in China. The reason is concerns that the executive staff would be far from the American headquarters, while it was necessary to avoid a mass transfer of employees to OpenAI.

Apple employees working on consumer devices have also increasingly moved to OpenAI after it announced a partnership with startup Iva IO. Tang Tang — OpenAI’s current chief hardware officer and Apple’s former head of product design — promised employees he had lured from Apple that they would “experience less bureaucracy and more collaboration” at OpenAI, a person familiar with Tang’s work told The Information.
