The new structure has received over $4 billion in initial investments from leading global funds and consulting giants, and will also be strengthened by a team of 150 specialists through the acquisition of Tomoro, according to the official OpenAI blog.
The plan is for the OpenAI Deployment Company to focus on a new type of engineer, Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs), who will integrate directly into customer teams to identify the most effective AI use cases, review infrastructure, and redesign workflows around OpenAI models.
To jumpstart its efforts, OpenAI has agreed to acquire Tomoro, an applied AI consulting and engineering firm. The deal is expected to bring about 150 experienced engineers to DeployCo from day one, having previously worked on complex projects for clients including Supercell, Tesco, and Virgin Atlantic.
The project partners include 19 global investment and consulting firms. The group was led by TPG, with participation from Bain Capital, Goldman Sachs, SoftBank, and McKinsey & Company. OpenAI retains a majority stake and control of the new company.
«The next phase of enterprise AI will be determined by how effectively businesses can implement these technologies into real-world use cases. The work now is to help organizations rethink mission-critical workflows around intelligence that can reason, act, and deliver measurable results,» the company notes.
FDE is currently «the hottest job in AI.» Earlier, 24-year-old Kanav Bhatnagar, who worked as a software engineer at Amazon but moved to the FDE position at startup Actively AI, told what skills are needed to work in this position.
