Testing of visual advertising will begin in the US this month, The Verge reports .
The first ad units appeared in ChatGPT in February, but until now they were limited to just the company name, logo, and product link in a specially marked section below text responses. Now, visual ads will be shown “at the initial stage” during image generation.
The company emphasizes that the new graphic blocks will be placed separately from the image generated on request and “will not affect the responses provided by ChatGPT.”
Ad units will not be shown to users with ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Enterprise subscriptions. OpenAI also assured that it uses special filters to analyze the context of the dialogue. The goal is to not show ads in “emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or other inappropriate situations.”
Currently, visual ads are being tested with the first group of selected advertisers, but the company plans to experiment with other formats in the future.
