The company reported reaching $10 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR) less than three years after launching its popular chatbot ChatGPT.
According to CNBC, based on an official comment from an OpenAI representative, this amount includes revenue from end-user products, ChatGPT business solutions, and API commerce. However, the figure does not include revenue from Microsoft licensing and one-time large deals.
OpenAI generated about $5.5 billion in ARR last year, nearly doubling its growth year-over-year. However, despite the impressive revenue, the company is projected to lose about $5 billion in 2024 due to heavy investments in technology development and service expansion.
The company has ambitious plans, with OpenAI targeting $125 billion in revenue by 2029, according to an insider familiar with the details. This meets the high expectations of investors, including Microsoft, Japan’s SoftBank, Coatue, Altimeter and Thrive.
The launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 dramatically increased OpenAI’s popularity, and in 2023, active promotion of business products began. As of March 2025, the service has over 500 million weekly active users and 3 million paid business users.
OpenAI has become one of the fastest-growing tech companies, pushing its valuation to $40 billion after its latest funding round in March. The company is valued at about 30 times annual revenue, reflecting investor confidence in the continued scale and impact of AI on the market. At the same time, the large losses show that the company continues to invest significant resources in research and development to maintain its leadership in the industry.
We also recently published a story about a new AI gadget from OpenAI and legendary Apple designer Jony Ive that will be slightly larger than the AI Pin, will not have a display, and will be worn around the neck. Mass production is expected in 2027, and the production location may be Vietnam.
