OpenAI has released ChatGPT Work: an AI agent based on the new GPT-5.6 that independently controls a computer and creates web applications

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Work, a new autonomous AI agent capable of executing multi-stage projects, interacting with work applications, and managing files. The tool is powered by the company’s new flagship model, GPT-5.6, which the company also released today.

The large-scale ecosystem update and the release of new products are announced on the developer's official blog.

ChatGPT Work's architecture is based on Codex technology, which is used by over five million people every week. Previously, this tool was positioned exclusively as a coding assistant, but now its capabilities have been adapted for a wider range of office tasks. Thanks to the transition to GPT-5.6, the agent has improved logical thinking skills and the ability to perform complex tasks without constant control from the user.

What ChatGPT Work can do

The key innovation was the updated desktop application for Windows and Mac, which combined a regular chat, a work agent and Codex. Thanks to the new Computer Use feature, the artificial intelligence can physically interact with the computer: click, enter text and move files in the background. The application also received a built-in browser for searching for information, which is why OpenAI decided to abandon further development of its experimental Atlas browser.

To synchronize with the corporate environment, the agent uses plugins that connect it to Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, CRM systems, and other tools. The developers also added the Scheduled Tasks feature, which allows the AI to perform routine tasks on a schedule — for example, monitor updates in work chats and generate reports on its own.

Another feature currently in public beta is Sites, which allows you to generate interactive web applications, dashboards, and portals directly within the chatbot interface, with the ability to share them via URL links.

The web version of the product is rolling out to Pro, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers today, with Plus and Business users getting access within a few days. The desktop version, which includes Work and Codex tools, is available on all plans, including the free one.

Recall that in a previous update, OpenAI closed the Pulse personalized daily summary feature , which the company launched last year.
