Two early testers of the new model told Reuters that they were impressed with its ability to code and solve scientific and mathematical problems, but believe the jump from GPT-4 to GPT-5 is not as big as from GPT-3 to GPT-4.
GPT-4's leap was based on greater computing power and data volume, and the company hoped that «scaling» in a similar way would consistently lead to improvements in artificial intelligence models.
But OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft and currently valued at $300 billion, has faced scaling challenges.
One of the problems was the «data wall» the company faced, and former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutzkever previously stated that while computing power was increasing, the amount of data was not.
Besides the lack of data, another problem was that «training runs» for large models are more likely to have hardware failures, given the complexity of the system, and researchers may not know the final performance of the models until the end of the run, which can last months.
OpenAI has not said when GPT-5 will be released, but according to media reports, it is expected to happen soon.
