OpenAI is removing the automatic model selection system in ChatGPT for most users

From now on, GPT-5.2 Instant, the fastest and cheapest version of OpenAI’s new lineup, will be the default model for Free and Go users. Such users will still have access to reasoning models, but they will now have to choose them manually, writes WIRED.
The routing system was launched just four months ago alongside GPT-5. This feature analyzes user queries before deciding whether ChatGPT should respond with a fast and cheap AI model or a slower but more expensive reasoning model.
Ideally, a router should direct users to the smartest systems when they need them. Previously, accessing advanced systems was done through a confusing menu of model selections.
In practice, the router appears to have sent far more free users to OpenAI’s advanced reasoning models, which are more expensive to maintain. Shortly after launch, Altman said the router had increased reasoning model usage among free users from less than 1% to 7%. It was an expensive bet aimed at improving ChatGPT’s responses, but the model router didn’t get the widespread acceptance OpenAI had hoped for.
According to WIRED sources, the use of the router has led to a drop in user activity. The main problem is that models with reasoning functions, despite their efficiency, require significant time and large resources to generate a response. It turned out that for most users speed is a priority over quality, and they are not ready for long waits.
An OpenAI representative explained that Free and Go plan owners prefer standard chat with the ability to independently select the “reasoning” mode only when necessary. OpenAI declined to specify what user signals influenced this decision. The company also noted that the Instant series models now also have the ability to “think longer” on queries, which makes them closer to advanced reasoning models.
According to sources, OpenAI may relaunch the model router for free and Go users once it is improved.
Recall that OpenAI has released a new version of ChatGPT Images with access for all users . The model follows text instructions much better, allows for more precise photo editing, and produces results up to four times faster.
