The company has been working on the issue of underage users for some time, and its new “age prediction” feature only complements the already existing protections.
The new feature uses an artificial intelligence algorithm that evaluates user accounts for certain “behavioral and account-level signals” to identify young users, TechCrunch writes .
These “signals” include things like the user’s stated age, how long the account has been in existence, and the time of day the account is typically active.
The company already has content filters designed to screen out discussions of sex, violence, and other potentially problematic topics for users under 18. If the age prediction engine identifies an account as under 18, these filters are applied automatically.
If a user is mistakenly identified as a minor, they have the option to restore their “adult” account status. To do this, according to OpenAI, they need to send a selfie to the company’s identity verification partner, Persona.
