OpenAI will stop Cursor from giving its models direct access. What will change for users?
OpenAI plans to end Cursor’s direct access to its models after Anysphere, Cursor’s developer, was acquired by SpaceX. The shutdown is proposed to take place on November 12th.
OpenAI plans to end Cursor’s direct access to its models after Anysphere, Cursor’s developer, was acquired by SpaceX. The shutdown is proposed to take place on November 12th.
Cursor now negotiates directly with AI model developers, allowing it to offer GPT, Claude, Gemini, and other models right inside the editor. When a user selects, for example, the GPT-5.3 Codex model, Cursor passes a query to it and returns a response in its interface. OpenAI wants to end this kind of direct access by Cursor to its models.
However, developers can add their own OpenAI API key. Cursor will then continue to send requests to the model, but through the user’s personal account, and they will have to pay OpenAI for use at its API rates. Alternatively, they can use the Codex extension or connect the model through a compatible third-party service.
«We are making this decision because we cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology in accordance with our terms of service, given our experience with contract violations by Elon Musk’s companies,» OpenAI said.
The contract with Cursor has a separate clause in case of a change of ownership. It gives OpenAI a certain amount of time to exit the deal. The company has now decided to take advantage of this. SpaceX agreed to buy Anysphere for $60 billion in June, and completed the acquisition this month. However, the company’s co-founder Michael Truell said that OpenAI’s models currently generate only about 5% of Cursor’s traffic.
Musk himself responded to OpenAI’s decision by saying he didn’t care. He also called Sam Altman and OpenAI president Greg Brockman «untrustworthy» and again said they «stole an open source nonprofit.»
In addition, just a few hours after OpenAI’s statement, Anthropic announced that it would increase the computing power for Claude models in Cursor.
Previously, dev.ua wrote that Elon Musk’s SpaceX agreed to acquire Anysphere for $60 billion. The deal was intended, in particular, to give Cursor more computing power to develop its own AI models.
