OpenAI shuts down Atlas, but doesn't abandon ambitions for an AI browser
OpenAI is shutting down Atlas, the AI-powered browser it launched in October that was the brainchild of ChatGPT. But the company isn’t giving up on the idea that AI should help users navigate the web. Instead, it’s taking some of the agent-based browsing features it tested in Atlas and porting them to the ChatGPT desktop app and Google Chrome extension.
For much of last year, the AI industry has been waging a war to displace Chrome as the number one place people spend their time online. Perplexity launched Comet, The Browser Company introduced Dia, and Google and Microsoft updated their Chrome and Edge with new AI-powered features.
However, after several months of experimentation, OpenAI seems to have concluded that the browser is just a feature, not the end goal. So the company is integrating the browser capabilities of its Atlas autonomous agents into places where people are already used to working, including Chrome itself, writes TechCrunch.
ChatGPT Chrome Extension
OpenAI is launching a ChatGPT Chrome extension that accesses the context of the current page and lets users ask questions about it, summarize content, or run more complex tasks right from the browser. It’s a direct competitor to Google’s Gemini sidebar, which performs a number of similar functions.
Browser in the ChatGPT desktop application
OpenAI is also expanding the capabilities of the ChatGPT desktop application by integrating a more powerful built-in browser. Now users will be able to browse websites, log in to accounts, upload files, and interact with pages directly in ChatGPT. At the same time, a separate cloud browser runs remotely on OpenAI servers — that’s where the application’s autonomous agents will perform tasks on the user’s behalf.
Together, these updates transform ChatGPT into a single, seamless workspace that spans Chrome, the desktop app, and the AI agent.
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
