Tesla CEO and recently one of the key reformers in the US, Elon Musk, plans to release a batch of 5,000 Optimus humanoid robots this year.

As Mezha.media writes, citing a meeting with employees, Musk said that in 2025 Tesla plans to complete the first production cycle, producing 5,000 units of robots.

Musk said the company aims to stockpile enough components to build up to 12,000 robots, but because of the novelty of the product, he expects the actual number of robots to be 5,000. He compared the planned number of robots to the size of a Roman legion, which he is both excited and concerned about.

The Optimus robots, which Musk has called the greatest product of all time, have been in development since 2021. Tesla unveiled an improved version of the Optimus robot at an event in late 2024. At the time, Musk told the crowd that Optimus was «the greatest product ever created.» It was later reported that the robots at the event were remotely controlled by humans. Later, during the company’s Q4 2024 earnings call, Musk shed more light on the production plans, adding that the product has the potential to generate more than $10 trillion in revenue. He also mentioned plans to produce thousands of humanoid robots by 2025. Previously, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO had already estimated the cost of Optimus at $20,000-30,000.

Tesla plans to significantly increase production in the coming years, aiming to reach 50,000 units by 2026. Optimus robots have the potential to change the way we approach routine and dangerous tasks, opening up new opportunities for automation across industries.

Last week, Musk confirmed his commitment last year to send Tesla Optimus robots to Mars and said when humans could land on the «red planet.»
