A Ukrainian solo developer created AutoRoam, a road trip planner that replaces dozens of browser tabs

According to the founder, the application solves a pain point for drivers that is ignored by traditional navigators: instead of simply navigating on a map, AutoRoam collects into a single interactive timeline everything that you usually have to keep open in a dozen browser tabs — the route, fuel prices, places to stay for the night, vignettes for crossing borders.

How it works

Conventional navigators like Google Maps or Waze do a good job of building a route from point A to point B, but they don’t answer the questions that arise when planning a long trip: how much the trip will cost in total, where to stay overnight after 8 hours of driving, which borders you will have to cross, and where to buy vignettes for toll roads. Usually, drivers calculate this manually — they search for intermediate cities for overnight stays on Booking, Google the rules of border crossings, and calculate fuel costs separately. AutoRoam takes this routine on itself.

The application breaks the route into logical segments and forms a «Trip Timeline» — a vertical visual timeline of the journey with all stops and events in chronological order.

Smart overnight stops: the app automatically calculates travel time and suggests optimal cities for overnight stops (for example, every 8 hours of driving), instantly bringing up accommodation options.

Accurate estimate: the built-in cost aggregator calculates the cost of fuel based on the consumption of a specific car plus 10% of the reserve, supports multi-currency (UAH, USD, EUR, PLN) and immediately shows the final trip budget.

Borders and vignettes: the application recognizes state border crossings and dynamically pulls up links to official websites for purchasing vignettes or paying for roads.

One-click insurance: integration of recommendations for obtaining a Green Card and travel insurance.

AutoRoam is a fully responsive web application optimized for any device without the need to download it from the App Store or Google Play. The mobile version has a native-like interface: a bottom navigation bar (Bottom Bar) and an interactive map sheet (Map Sheet) for one-handed navigation on the go.

The desktop version is built on the Split View concept with a dynamic photo background of the countries through which the route passes. Technically, the project is built on Next.js 16 (App Router), React 19, Tailwind CSS and Zustand, with a serverless infrastructure on Vercel Postgres. Open solutions OSRM and OpenStreetMap are used for route construction and geocoding — this ensures speed of work and independence from paid APIs.

The project earns money through affiliate programs — integration of the Stay22 accommodation booking service and Hotline.Finance insurance products.
