A Ukrainian created Chalkery — an open-source mod pack for controlling tokens, cache, and hints in Claude Code
Yehor Hunia, Education Project Specialist at Genesis Tech, has developed a set of open-source mods for Claude Code — Chalkery. The tool adds an interactive information bar directly above the input field in the terminal and desktop application, helping to monitor token spending, manage context, and plan next steps in a conversation with an AI.
“Finally, the generation that installed mods on Minecraft can install mods on Claude,” jokes Yehor Hunia in his LinkedIn post. “In long sessions, I sometimes miss three moments: when the context is already too big and it’s time to switch to a new session; when the prompt cache has cooled down and the next message will overwrite the entire context at full cost; and what, in fact, to do next. Now it’s all visible at once.”
The project is built on Claude Code’s new function hooks feature and offers three separate mods that can be used together or separately.
handoff-relay — adds a Handoff button that automatically highlights when 180,000 context tokens are reached. Clicking it generates a summary handoff document, which is convenient for starting a new session.
cache-meter — displays the time until the prompt cache cools down and the cost of overwriting it. The "Keep warm" option prevents the cache from being reset, and the mod asks for confirmation before loading into the large, cooled cache.
next-steps — the “What next?” button generates up to 3 next action options. The model only asks for a hint after a click (without spending extra tokens), and the selected option becomes a draft.
According to the developer, the mods support English and Ukrainian (configured automatically or via /config parameters). The project code is already publicly available on GitHub .
Chalkery requires Claude Code version 2.1.289 or later (you can check with the claude --version command). Older builds of the tool do not support the manifests used.
Тест dev.ua
