OpenAI and Jony Ive may still have to resolve a few serious unresolved issues before releasing their long-awaited AI device.
According to the Financial Times, the project is still facing “technical difficulties” that could ultimately push back the device’s release date, which could ultimately delay the device’s release, scheduled for 2026, Engadget writes .
One of the outstanding issues is the development of the AI assistant's voice and manner of communication, sources tell the FT. The device is intended to be "a computer friend, not your weird AI girlfriend," an insider tells the Financial Times.
In addition to personality, OpenAI and Ive still haven't settled on privacy issues, as the device will be constantly listening to its surroundings.
In addition, the budget will likely be too large due to the high computing power requirements needed for mass production of such AI gadgets.
Aside from these latest difficulties, very little is known about the upcoming product. Sam Altman has hinted that the device could be pocket-sized, aware of its surroundings, and display-free. There are still many questions about what exactly OpenAI's first hardware development will be, but the company is likely exercising more caution, as similar devices, such as the Humane AI Pin , were discontinued after sales flopped.
Recall that information about this device appeared back in May of this year. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that this AI gadget will be slightly larger than the AI Pin, will not have a display and will be worn around the neck.
In September, The Information reported that OpenAI and Ive were developing several devices. In addition to this pin device, they are also working on a smart speaker, glasses, and a voice recorder.
