AI companion in the form of a portable speaker without a screen: what is known about the new OpenAI device
OpenAI’s long-awaited entry into the consumer electronics market will begin with the release of a movable smart speaker without a screen. According to insiders, the device was conceived as a completely new type of home computer for the era of artificial intelligence. The company plans to present the novelty this year with an eye on a release in 2027. However, plans may change due to a serious obstacle: Apple is trying to obtain a court injunction on OpenAI’s hardware.
What is known about the device
The developers are positioning the gadget not just as a smart speaker, but as a first-of-its-kind home computer for the AI era. Its main goal is to become a physical embodiment of ChatGPT and a human companion, reports Bloomberg.
Main features and capabilities:
The device has mechanical elements that move on their own, giving it the feeling of being alive, rather than just reacting to commands.
The speaker is not tied to an outlet — it has a battery, so it is easy to move from room to room (for example, to the kitchen while cooking or to the laundry room).
The device is equipped with a camera and other sensors to see, understand the environment, and read context.
The communication will be based on the cutting-edge GPT-Live voice mode (which OpenAI released this month). The device can speak and listen at the same time, adjust to the pace of the conversation, and process information instantly.
The gadget will analyze the user’s personal data (e.g., email) to learn their habits, anticipate needs, and act proactively.
It will help you control your smart home, turn on media, and respond to messages and questions.
The project is still in development, so the final features may change. OpenAI representatives are currently declining to make official comments.
To build its device manufacturing business, OpenAI last year spent $6.5 billion to buy io Products, a startup co-founded by legendary Apple designer Jony Ive.
According to the lawsuit, OpenAI has brought on more than 400 former Apple employees. In addition to Ive and Tang, the development of the speaker and other future OpenAI products is led by Evans Henkey, a former head of Apple’s industrial design department. And last month, OpenAI hired Paul Mead, a longtime Apple executive who led the development of the Vision Pro headset and future smart glasses.
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
