$131 million for Cybertruck and $4 million for Musk's security, colonies on Mars and warnings about Grok: strange details in SpaceX's presentation to investors

SpaceX on Wednesday publicly disclosed a prospectus to investors as part of its plan to debut on the U.S. stock market next month at a valuation of $1.75 trillion. The document revealed previously unknown details about the finances and future plans of Elon Musk’s flagship company. In addition to fresh information on operating expenses and revenue, the filing also included Musk’s signature sweeping statements about the universe and shed light on some of the quirks of his tech empire.

The prospectus, which is more than 300 pages long, is littered with several risk warnings and confidential information that vividly demonstrate the eccentricity of Musk’s company and its space ambitions. Other financial details in the document highlight how interdependent Musk’s various businesses have become and the risks that this entails, The Guardian writes .

Last year, SpaceX spent about $131 million on the Cybertruck

SpaceX appears to be heavily involved with Tesla, having spent hundreds of millions of dollars on Musk’s electric vehicle company in recent years. While most of that money — $506 million in 2025 and $191 million in 2024 — went to buy Tesla’s Megapack industrial battery systems, SpaceX has also spent heavily on its Cybertruck pickup trucks.

The prospectus states that SpaceX purchased the Cybertruck in 2025 for $131 million at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $69,900 to $99,900, depending on the configuration. At that cost, SpaceX was to purchase at least 1,300 vehicles.

According to auto industry sales reports, Tesla sold a total of just 20,237 Cybertrucks last year, meaning SpaceX purchases accounted for a significant portion of its total sales.

Spread the "light of consciousness" to the stars

Throughout the prospectus, SpaceX emphasizes that its ultimate goal is to establish colonies on the Moon and Mars, which will usher in the next stage of the evolution of human civilization and expand humanity's presence in the universe.

“By moving beyond the only home we have ever known, we ensure the survival of our species through duplication. In this way, we ensure that the light of consciousness is not tied to a single planet, subject to the inevitable threats of a harsh and vast universe,” the document states. “We do not want humans to suffer the same fate as the dinosaurs.”

One section of the brochure features an image of life on Mars, apparently generated by artificial intelligence. The illustration shows a family on Mars watching a rocket launch in the middle of a field of geodesic domes and rows of solar panels.

This science fiction rhetoric is not just theory, it has real financial stakes. Musk will be rewarded with 1 billion shares of the company if SpaceX achieves “the establishment of a permanent human colony on Mars with at least 1 million inhabitants.”

The interplanetary ambitions of SpaceX's main mission also raise some caveats for investors, with the company warning that achieving such unusual business goals as understanding the "true nature of the universe" could be challenging.

"We face a number of challenges related to our business and growth strategy, and ultimately, to the realization of our mission - to make life multiplanetary, to understand the true nature of the Universe, and to spread the light of consciousness to the stars," the prospectus says.

Grok Warnings

SpaceX's investor risk section lists a number of legal and regulatory concerns related to various investigations, lawsuits and scandals surrounding Musk, several of which concern xAI, Musk's artificial intelligence company that SpaceX acquired in February.

One excerpt from the prospectus states that xAI’s Grok chatbot, especially in its “spicy” and “crazy” modes, poses an increased risk of harm. Specifically, it refers to “the generation of potentially explicit content, misinformation or misleading results, the possibility of creating pornographic or exploitative images without consent, intellectual property infringement, and content that may be considered exploitative, harmful, offensive, violent, or discriminatory.”

The prospectus also states that the company is the subject of numerous domestic and international investigations and requests from law enforcement agencies related to allegations that Grok's artificial intelligence created images without the consent of real people.

The Center to Combat Digital Hate (CCDH) estimated that Grok generated more than 3 million sexually explicit images in just 11 days earlier this year, before the company tightened some restrictions on its output. The bot itself admitted that it was generating images of “minors in revealing clothing.” Several people, including minors, have since filed lawsuits alleging that the company was profiting from sexual abuse and child sexual exploitation material.

Last year, SpaceX spent $4 million on Musk's personal security

Musk has long been publicly concerned about his personal safety and threats to his life. Through his private foundation and with the help of one of his key aides, Musk has registered security companies in California and Texas to provide his protection.

SpaceX’s filings show that it has been funneling increasing amounts of money to Musk’s security firm in recent years. The company’s expenses totaled $2 million in 2023, $3 million in 2024, and $4 million last year. The filing also says that $1 million was spent on these services in the first three months of 2026.

Musk has repeatedly claimed that he frequently faces death threats and risks to his safety, especially during the period when he became the face of his “Department of Government Efficiency” initiative, aimed at significantly reducing federal agencies and humanitarian aid.

SpaceX may never become profitable

In outlining the risks, SpaceX has made some serious caveats about its products and plans. The company has acknowledged that its massive spending has led to huge losses, totaling $4.9 billion in 2025 and $4.3 billion in the first quarter of this year alone. Such admissions about potential future risks and the lack of guaranteed returns are standard practice when preparing documents for an IPO.

“We have a history of net losses and may not achieve profitability in the future,” the prospectus states.

In another section of the report, SpaceX notes that to successfully realize its vision, it will have to continue to pour huge sums of money into experimental and unproven technologies. These large-scale and risky bets, which are the foundation of its business, may simply not pay off: “Many of the innovative products and services described in this prospectus may ultimately prove unsuccessful and require enormous costs.”
